FAQ
Below, you will find some of the most frequently asked questions about business writing in general and my services in particular.
Business Writing Questions
What exactly is a business writer?
A business writer, also known as a copywriter, is an individual who produces written materials for businesses for either internal or external use. These materials include such items as press releases, training manuals marketing brochures and website copy.
What are the advantages of hiring a business writer over doing this work in-house?There are three key advantages to hiring a freelance business writer for your busines writing needs:
1. A business writer has the experience crafting copy that is effective and well written. This includes knowing how to grab reader attention and which words to use to best convey the information quickly and with greatest impact.
2. A business writer has a more objective view of your business, allowing them to see aspects someone close to the business may not see. For instance, a business writer writing a training manual for the office receptionist might explain something in the manual that the business owner overlooks because he or she considers it obvious, such as the proper telephone greeting or protocol for breaks and lunch.
3. When a business owner or manager asks an in-house person to produce these materials, the costs may be much higher when you consider that the chosen employee must take valuable time away from their usual tasks, or must write these materials quickly, without adequate preparation. It makes more sense from a financial standpoint to hire a professional business writer to create the materials your business needs, pay the one-time expense, and allow your employees to continue doing the work they were hired to perform.

Over the past year, I have worked extensively with Elizabeth Rudolph of the National Center for Legal Nurse Consulting, creating teaching and marketing materials. This includes a textbook, several e-courses, a virtual internship and direct mail package.
How do you charge for your services?
In general, I charge by the project for each assignment, and memorialize same with a contract between myself and the client with regard to deadlines, fees and other terms and conditions.
I see that you are in Memphis, Tennessee. My business is located in Seattle. How can you and I work together?
There are two options:
1. We can work predominantly via the internet and telephone. This is actually my preferred method, even with local businesses. Except for a few materials that might need to be provided via mail or courier, it is simpler for everyone involved to use e-mail and phone contact.
2. If it is necessary for me to physically visit your business, travel expenses are incorporated into my fee at the front end. No surprises. Guaranteed.
